Behind the Curtain

Where I might say a few words from time to time to notify visitors of changes or additions.
Yeah, right.

Or maybe I will just comment on some current event.

A policy of an eye for an eye, will only lead to everyone being blind.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

DON'T MAKE THESE SILLY UPGRADES:
You've no doubt heard the expression "throwing
money at the problem." That's a tendency a lot of us have when it
comes to technology--especially upgrades. Sound's no good? Must
need a new sound card, for a couple hundred bucks and a couple
hours of installation time, too. Internet too slow? Must need a
top-of-the-line 802.11g router. Well, Rafe Needleman is here to
save you from throwing that money at the wrong upgrades. Think of
it as smarter shopping, tech style.

 Some people are like Slinkies...

They're not really good for anything,
But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight
 of stairs.

Go Rimbaud . . .
Index of First Lines

She was barely dressed though,
Through blue summer evenings, Ill go down the pathways,
Youre not serious when youre seventeen.
You Dead of ninety-two and ninety-three,
The pale Man walks through the flowery scene,
At centre, the Emperor, blue-yellow, in apotheosis,
In winter well travel in a little pink carriage.
While the red spittle of the grape-shot
I ran off, fists in my ragged seams:
For eight days, Id ripped up my boots.
In the brown dining-room, its perfumed air
Its a green hollow where a river sings.
And the mother, closing the work-book.
When the childs brow, tormented by red,
As I floated down impassive Rivers,22
A black, E white, I red, U green, O blue: vowels.
Lord, when the fields are cold,
Clear water: stinging like the childs salt tears,
Far from the village girls, cattle, birds,
Idle Youth.
Its found you see.
O seasons, O chateaux,

Using Web-smart colors (FrontPage 98/2000/2002/2003) For years, Web design gurus have preached about the Web-safe color palette, a palette of just 216 colors that render correctly on 256-color monitors on either Windows or Mac systems. Since the Web-safe palette first appeared, however, most users (some 95 percent) have upgraded to or bought monitors capable of displaying thousands or millions of colors, making the Web-safe palette all but irrelevant. But that's not to say that there's no need for a similar, but larger, palette. In fact, Kirk Franklin has created just such a palette--the Web-smart palette. It includes 4,096 colors that render well on 16-bit and higher monitors. Franklin's Web site, http://www.morecrayons.com lets you interact with his palette in a number of ways. For example, you can zoom in on any slice of the cube shown in the figure to get hexadecimal and RGB values for each of the 256 colors in that slice. By picking colors from this palette when you're specifying custom colors in FrontPage, you'll ensure that your site visitors see your pages as you intended them to.

As usual in politics, enforcement of election law is inconsistent at best. In 1994, when Katherine Harris ran for the state Senate, she accepted about $20,000 from Riscorp, a Sarasota-based insurance company. The contribution supposedly came from a number of employees, who, contrary to law, were reimbursed for their generosity. When Riscorp officers faced trial in 1998, a federal prosecutor introduced an internal Riscorp memo implicating Harris: "Katherine's office called and asked if we could give them different addresses to list for each of the checks. All the checks show the P.O. Box 1598 address and if they submit these, the newspaper will probably make the connection and track them all back to Riscorp." To clear the matter, Harris later wrote two personal checks, totaling $20,000, to the Elections Commission. http://www.heraldtribune.com

Weapons of Math Instruction: Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2004 At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction. "Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like "x"and "y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns", but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. "As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared. When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.
